Often compared to Shakespeare, Lope de Vega is considered the greatest of all Spanish playwrights, and Fuenteovejuna (The Sheep Well) is among the most important Spanish Golden Age plays.
Written in 1614, the play centers on the decision of an entire village to admit to the premeditated murder of a tyrannical ruler after he terrorizes the citizens and attacks the young women of the town. Based on an actual historical incident, Fuenteovejuna celebrates the concept of collective responsibility and affirms the timeless values of justice and kindness. Lope de Vega masterfully weaves this tale of young lovers, justice, and honor, to an exciting climax.
Proscenium Circus will team with Diego Mansilla of the ABRHS World Language Department to bring the beauty of the Spanish language and culture to life on stage.
This production will be presented on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 3:00 pm at Ipswich High School as part of the Semi-Final Round of the METG High School Drama Festival Competition. Tickets are $10 at the door.
